“We are ashamed,” the people say. “We are insulted and disgraced because the Lord’s Temple has been defiled by foreigners.” “Yes,” says the Lord, “but the time is coming when I will destroy Babylon’s idols. The groans of her wounded people will be heard throughout the land. Though Babylon reaches as high as the heavens and makes her fortifications incredibly strong, I will still send enemies to plunder her. I, the Lord, have spoken!”
Jeremiah 51:51-53 NLT
Delayed Consequences
We might think our sin isn’t all that bad. The Babylonians may have thought it was acceptable to worship their idols in temples built for God. The Israelites were insulted and ashamed. God is patient, but there is a day of reckoning up ahead when the consequences of sin will finally appear. Just like the Babylonians, great sorrow awaits anyone who continues in sin. Why do we think there are no consequences? We must not be fooled. There are always consequences, even if some are delayed longer than others.
