Until quite recently in human history most jobs or careers required sustained physical exertion.
Many jobs today have moved into an office where the work is done at desks or in the conference room … sitting.
You see “back in the day” sitting signified more than a physical posture, especially in the world Jesus grew up in. Sitting is a statement about work: that it is finished.
In our text today we find these words: “But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God” (Hebrews 10:12).
This theme comes up over and over again throughout the New Testament but especially in the book of Hebrews: the reality of the finishedwork of Christ on our behalf.
This means that when it comes to our final standing with God—the reality of our 'belovedness'—we bring nothing but our sin to the table and in exchange He gifts us His right-ness.
Because of what God in Christ has done on the cross 2,000 years ago you can know that you are His.
So breathe, stop trying to prove yourself, and take a seat.
”Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.“
