When Men Pray
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles. Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.” 1 Timothy 2:1-8 NIV
If the enemy were to begin to attack my neighborhood where I live, I hope to believe every man would come out and begin to protect our families and our homes. Well, the truth is our communities are under attack, but the invading army is invisible. We are engaged in spiritual warfare, and Paul in this text lays the lion’s share of the responsibility for repelling the enemy’s attack at the feet of the Christian men. The primary weapon is prayer.
We have to bring God into the equation or our equation won’t add up to anything at all. The word for men in verse 8 is not a generic word for the human race but the specific term “males.”
Could it be that one reason our communities, our nation, and our world are deteriorating is because God’s men are not praying with intensity and authentic passion?
Christian men, we have quite a kingdom-based prayer agenda. It’s time we get busy. - Tony Evans
