Vital signs- Tuesday, September 12th, 2023

The idea of a 4-word calling can feel anything but simple. Sometimes it seems easier to accept the idea of big, grand plans and purpose than to walk out your anything-for-God in small steps.

Big feels like a celebration; small feels, well, small.

Embracing the idea of a big calling feels like accepting a medal at the end of a marathon. It’s easy to see the prize without regard for the work that went into it. It’s easy to forget how you get to the finish line.

A marathon is won with thousands of tiny, ordinary steps.

I don’t know about you, but the medal at the end sounds a lot better than ordinary, tiny steps. But here’s the part we overlook:

If we find joy in the medal, we have joy for a moment.

If we find joy in the steps, we have joy for the whole race.

We all want joy, joy that lasts. And if that’s really what we long for we need to make peace with the ordinary, simple calling on our lives. Changing our perspective can change our days.

• Instead of looking to be the popular person with lots of friends, be a good friend to one.

• Instead of lamenting the messy house, thank God for your home.

• Instead of striving for bigger tomorrows, ask God how He wants to use you today.

• Instead of wishing for a better marriage, do something kind for your spouse.

• Instead of running endlessly to give your kids everything, stop and give them your presence.

It is in these simple pursuits that we will take joy-filled steps day after day.

It is in these steps that we will move closer to Jesus.

It is in these simple steps that we will walk in our calling.

Lord, thank you for making my call simple. Help me embrace the simplicity of it in all I do and say. Amen.

““If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭15‬ ‭ESV‬‬
