Vital signs- Tuesday,June 6th, 2023

“The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord saying, “Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will announce My words to you.” Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something on the wheel. But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make. Then the word of the Lord came to me saying, “Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.”

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭18‬:‭1‬-‭6‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind? Kidding. But for real, have you ever felt like the clay in these verses? Just kinda . . . there. Without vibrancy or purpose?

The clay itself is practically of no value—wet dirt from the ground. Shapeless. Formless. Clay. I think we all can feel that way sometimes. Discomfort and dissatisfaction start to creep into our thinking when we are mindlessly going about our daily life to find our place—striving to fit in and compromising morals or standards to feel known. We are the clay.

The potter, however, is a skilled artist. He has the patience and vision to create something beautiful and useful out of clay. When the potter sits down at his wheel to start crafting something brand new, where we see a pile of wet dirt, he sees all he’s got to work with. He knows that something beautiful will come out of it, so he spends the time, adding pressure, forming something unique and wonderful.

I can’t be alone in thinking at times, “Why God? Why would you spend time on me while I keep sinning against you and being disobedient?” Yet, He does. He KNOWS your flaws. He KNOWS where you are weak. He KNOWS you, and He KNOWS me. When you get confused, or when it gets hard, remind yourself that He is the Potter, applying pressure for our refinement, for our good, and for His Glory. While we "were"useless clay, through Jesus, the Potter formed us—and is continuing to form us—into something beautiful! He’s called you to something greater than yourself! You aren’t just mud; you are clay in the Potter’s hand.

(It's time to see ourselves the way the Father sees us.)
