“Making a Change Requires an Adjustment Period”
NFL rookie, Jarryd Hayne, converted from being a former star in the National Rugby League in Australia to playing football for the 49ers during the 2015 season. Although he showed promise with his new sport, he proved that he still has plenty to learn and hasn’t figured everything out yet. Following a mistake Jarryd made early in the season, one of his coaches said, “Every situation is a learning situation. It’s a new situation for Jarryd because he’s never played football before. That’s just one thing as we move forward - just got to keep learning from it.”
Hayne ended up spending a good portion of the season on the practice squad to continue his development.
When we start following Jesus, a new life and heart change take place, but there is an adjustment period to really begin thinking and living in a different way. Just as Jarryd Hayne discovers more about his new sport, we must recognize the grace and patience needed to transition from our old life to the life God has called us to.
God prepares us for His purposes and reveals to us what it takes to follow Him. As we grow in our new way of life, let’s pray David’s prayer in Psalm 25:4-5a: “Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me.”
“Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.”
Psalm 25:4-5 ESV
