Pray Even When You Don’t Feel It
“If you do not pray except when you feel like praying, you will not pray much, nor pray when you most need it.” — Charles Spurgeon
“But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.” - Jonah 2:9 NKJV
In just four chapters, the book of Jonah gives us profound insight into prayer. Jonah’s cry from the belly of the fish in chapter 2 isn’t spontaneous—it’s a compilation of Psalms. His prayer draws from Psalm 18, 42, 69, 5, 30, 14, and again from 18 and 3. For centuries, scholars categorized the Psalms as either laments or thanksgiving, and Jonah’s prayer is filled with both emotion and learned thanksgiving.
Real prayer is more than venting feelings. It is shaped by truth, filled with God’s Word, and fueled by a sense of God’s presence. Mature prayer lifts our eyes off ourselves and sets our hearts on the One who rescues. When you don’t feel like praying, those are often the moments you need it most.
Pray anyway. Let your prayers be shaped by the Word, not your mood.
