Reputation vs. Reality

"I know all the things you do. I have seen your love, your faith, your service, and your patient endurance. And I can see your constant improvement in all these things. But I have this complaint against you. You are permitting that woman—Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet—to lead my servants astray. She teaches them to commit sexual sin and to eat food offered to idols. I gave her time to repent, but she does not want to turn away from her immorality." —Revelation 2:19-21 (NLT)

Beneath their outward reputations, some of the best-known people may be anything but godly. Those who appear the most righteous are sometimes engaged in truly sinful behavior—just like the church in Sardis. God’s message to Sardis was that, although they seemed alive, they were actually dead. They needed to return to what they had originally heard and live according to it.

Much of our lives may look good on the surface, but our reality does not always match our reputation. Rather than reinforcing an image, we must correct the character beneath it.
