“And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.”
(2 Peter 1:18-19 )
Peter was not saying that the things he saw did not happen. Peter was not saying the things he felt, he did not feel. He's simply saying, the Word of God that survives human teachers is the Word of God that surmounts human testimonies. He was saying, “I saw it. I know it is true. I was an eyewitness. I saw Him. But we've got a more sure word of prophecy—the Word of God.”
When he says a confirmed prophecy, he wasn’t talking about prophecy that foretells the future; he was talking about the revealed body of God’s truth, the Bible. The Bible survives human teachers. And the Bible surmounts human testimonies. Many of us say, “Oh, if I could only have been there when Jesus was on Earth. If I could only have been on the mount of transfiguration. If I could only have seen that.” But I want to tell you, you've got something better right now. You have a more sure Word of prophecy.
• What are some ways you have prized experience over the revealed Word of God?
• How can we be sure that we are prioritizing the Word of God above any other means of encounter with God?
