A Detail We May Have Missed

“My child, listen and be wise: Keep your heart on the right course. Do not carouse with drunkards or feast with gluttons.”—Proverbs 23:19-20 NLT

When we hear sermons and messages on alcohol and drunkenness, it’s easy to agree with the proverb that it is not good to carouse with drunkards. Sermons and messages about gluttony are rarer, even though many people, including myself, struggle with overeating. Gluttony could be viewed as an epidemic. When we, as believers, refuse to address our gluttony, we miss an opportunity to strengthen church members and draw in those outside the church. Why? Because following biblical principles in our supportive community is a way out of gluttony and overeating that many people, including myself, need. Judging others in areas where we don’t struggle while ignoring our own struggles is never the way of the Father!
