The Value of Prayer and Fasting
“But you, when you pray, go into your room… and pray to your Father who is in the secret place.” — Matthew 6:6 (NKJV)
“However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” — Matthew 17:21 (NKJV)
Prayer and fasting are powerful spiritual disciplines that draw us closer to God and strengthen our dependence on Him. Prayer is our direct line of communication with the Father—a place of surrender, worship, and intimate fellowship. Fasting, when joined with prayer, helps quiet the distractions of the flesh so our hearts can hear God more clearly.
Throughout Scripture, God’s people fasted when seeking wisdom, breakthrough, repentance, and renewed strength. Fasting does not earn God’s favor, but it positions our hearts to receive His direction and power. It reminds us that our deepest need is not physical bread, but God’s presence and His Word.
Jesus Himself modeled both prayer and fasting, showing us their value in overcoming temptation and walking in spiritual authority. When we choose to set aside comfort to seek God, He meets us with peace, clarity, and renewed spiritual strength.
What might God be inviting you to surrender so you can seek Him more deeply through prayer and fasting?
Heavenly Father, teach me to value time in Your presence above all else. Help me to pray with sincerity and to fast with a heart focused on You. Strengthen my spirit, align my desires with Your will, and draw me closer to You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
