Play domestic cricket first: Gill's clear message to Pandya on comeback
Auckland: A day before India begin a five-match ODI series in New Zealand, captain Shubman Gill has said something that reads less like a wish and more like a selection condition. He hopes Hardik Pandya will play some domestic cricket and then return to the national side. The series opens at Eden Park, Auckland on November 4, followed by Wellington on November 7, Hamilton on November 10, and Mount Maunganui on November 13 and 15.
"Hopefully he plays some domestic and gets back," Gill said. "We have had multiple conversations with him, the team management is in regular touch." The statement is a direct answer to a question that has shadowed Indian cricket for months: can franchise availability alone buy a national spot? The captain's answer is not ambiguous. Domestic cricket has effectively become the formal gate for a comeback.
The remark gains weight because, according to the report, Pandya was held back once again by a niggle before an India A match. In cricket's vocabulary "niggle" sounds light but can cover a wide range of severity. The India A fixture mattered precisely because it is the standard controlled re-entry checkpoint for a returning senior player. Being stopped at that checkpoint means the return-to-play pathway has reset to zero once more. The nature, location and severity of the complaint have not been officially disclosed.
Pandya has now missed five separate assignments—the home series against Afghanistan, the Ireland tour, the England tour, the home ODIs against West Indies and this New Zealand tour. That is not an incident; it is a pattern. His last appearance for India was the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad. Since then, his competitive cricket has been confined to the IPL, where he plays for Mumbai Indians.
That is the most diagnostic fact in this story, and it requires an understanding of format difference. At the IPL, a pace-bowling all-rounder bowls four overs a game under franchise-managed workload. In ODIs, the same player must absorb a ten-over quota, multiple spells and longer recovery cycles. Reading ODI readiness from IPL availability is a genuine format-transfer error, and it is the easiest mistake to make in Pandya's case.
Gill offered a second, quieter signal. He said the "No. 7 and No. 8 will also be taken care of" once the all-rounder returns. That sentence is an admission in itself: India's lower order is not settled, and its solution is being tied to one injury-prone individual.
India's problem is not a shortage of players but a shortage of roles. The squad can replace a batter or a bowler with relative ease, but it cannot manufacture a seam-bowling all-rounder who bats at six or seven and delivers ten overs. The standard alternative at No. 7 is a spin-bowling all-rounder who offers batting depth but not seam overs. Playing a specialist batter at seven forces the team into a sixth-bowler compromise.
New Zealand is the hardest possible venue for this problem. Early November there means spring: fresh pitches, cloud cover and swing-friendly conditions. Eden Park's boundaries are unusually short, while Wellington and Mount Maunganui generally offer more seam movement. Five ODIs in eleven days across four cities raise the value of rotation and make it risky to throw an undercooked player straight into the first match. Rain and Duckworth-Lewis-Stern interventions remain a live threat across an outdoor spring series.
Gill also framed the series clearly, saying the batting group was being taken forward with the "ODI World Cup" in mind. That one line changes the character of a bilateral series: it becomes a selection and workload laboratory rather than a results-first assignment. The next ODI World Cup lies roughly a year away in the cycle, the point at which squad shape begins to harden.
What has been least discussed is the shifting shape of selection policy itself. The captain's public statement has converted domestic cricket from an informal expectation into something approaching a formal gate. The India A pathway is part of the same machinery, allowing the board to test fitness in a controlled setting without exposing the senior XI. But the transparency gap is obvious: no medical bulletin, no expected return date, no stated selection criteria.
A second risk follows. When a high-profile centrally contracted player appears only in the IPL while missing five international assignments, a "franchise over country" debate becomes inevitable. It bears stating clearly that the report offers no explanation for the pattern. The cause could be medical, contractual or workload-related. Drawing conclusions without evidence would be a leap past the facts.
Gill did not question the player's quality. He said there are not many in the world who can do what Pandya can. That is a captain's public endorsement and should be read as a signal of team-management faith, not proof of readiness. Backing and match-fitness are different things.
What should be watched next? The most important signal will be Pandya's first competitive domestic fixture, and whether he completes a full bowling quota in it. The second is India's No. 7 in New Zealand—if a spin all-rounder plays there with only five specialist bowlers, the structural gap is plainly unresolved. The third is the squad for the next assignment: whether selectors begin developing a second seam-bowling all-rounder or keep betting on one body. Until a completed domestic outing is documented, any timeline for his return remains an estimate rather than information.
