The Second Mile
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.” - Matthew 5:38-42 NKJV
Jesus challenged people to do more than is required of them when everyone naturally wants to do the least. High Road leaders stand out because they go beyond what is expected of them. They don’t stand out when they do the bare minimum. They stand out because they give more than is reasonably expected. Jesus did not say that the one who punches the hardest wins the fight. No, he said, turn the other cheek.
What will set you and me apart from the rest of the world is the other cheek and the second mile. Jesus asked us to give more than what is expected. He did not ask us to treat others fairly. Jesus told us to take the high road and to give more, care more, do more than anyone would ever expect. Why? Because our actions say “I’m doing this first mile for you, but the second mile is only because of Jesus.”
The second mile is where others feel it as well as see it.
