“Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”— 1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NLT)
Training for Godliness
Athletes train their muscles for strength and skill. The elite Navy SEALs train to attain peak performance. The more we train physically and in the right way, the better our bodies function. Paul points out that while physical training is good, there are greater benefits in this life and for all eternity when we train to become strong, godly people. Reading scripture daily, studying the Word, praying, finding community, and seeking accountability—that’s training for godliness. It strengthens our morals rather than our muscles. It’s not about getting in better physical shape (though we should); it’s about getting in better spiritual shape and walking in the Spirit.
